National Religious Freedom Day

January 21, 2022 by Val DiGiorgio

Since 1993, the United States has celebrated the American right to religious freedom with the holiday, National Religious Freedom Day. This celebration is recognized every January 16th, as it has been for the last 29 years. Val DiGiorgio discusses this amazing display of American and religious pride:

Val DiGiorgio religious freedom

It’s no secret that religious freedom is a cornerstone of American life.  In fact, it’s one of our rights as American citizens to practice any religion that we so choose — publicly.  Although we may often take this right for granted, the reality is that not everyone in the world is so lucky.  Around the world, many people are persecuted specifically for their practice of a specific religion.  This, along with many other reasons, is why Val DiGiorgio is proud to celebrate how special it is that we have religious freedom in the United States of America!

On January 16, 1786, Thomas Jefferson presented the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom to the Virginia General Assembly, which effectively brought the concept of religious freedom in America to the forefront.  In 1993, the President of the United States officially established National Religious Freedom Day, which commemorates Jefferon’s incredible effort.  To celebrate the occasion, the holiday is celebrated on the same day that the original statute was approved: January 16th.
