On April 20, 2022, 200 high school students watched as their solar-powered mini racers took off towards the finish line! Solely running on solar energy, this isn’t the pinewood derby you might remember; it’s the STEM car race of tomorrow!
Since 2007, Sacramento high schoolers have taken part in the annual solar car race, year after year. Since its inception, the event has aimed to inspire young people to pursue further education and eventual careers in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. It’s no surprise to Val DiGiorgio, STEM Education Advocate and founder of the DiGiorgio STEAM Scholarship, that this exciting little race has become a staple. More than 200 students compete in the race every single year. The enthusiasm for the solar energy mini vehicles seems to ramp up more and more each year, too! Val is a huge supporter of events like this because he believes that fostering an educational environment where STEM subjects are fun and exciting truly has the chance to positively impact the future.
