Son of a military veteran and proud founder of the DiGiorgio Red, White & Blue Scholarship for military families, Val DiGiorgio discusses the honorable efforts of Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS):
Dealing with the loss of a loved one is always painful. For military families, living with the reality that your loved one may not return home is a daily source of pain and hardship. When the worst case scenario occurs and a loved one in the military loses his/her life for their country, their families are often at a unique place of loss. That’s why Bonnie Carroll founded Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), a nonprofit effort that supports the families of fallen service members.
Bonnie Carroll lost her husband, who was killed in a military plane crash along with seven other hero soldiers. At the time of the loss of her husband, there wasn’t a program out there that specifically aimed to support grieving military families. And that’s how TAPS came into creation. 30 years since it was established, TAPS has offered grievance support and community to military families in need of healing. The nonprofit holds individual and group sessions that offer military family members a safe space to discuss what they are going through. But there’s a silver lining to it all, too. TAPS has established a community that feels more like a family where members feel as though they have made friends for life! Val DiGiorgio proudly supports the wonderful efforts of this organization and applauds Bonnie Carroll for creating this incredible organization when she realized an unmet need. Bravo!
